I first visited Baffin Island in Canada's eastern Arctic in May of 1989, going north in pursuit of landscape photographs. The challenge of a new palette has always been the driving force behind my images. The Arctic offered that spiritual peace that is present in all landscapes. It is a place of light, pastels, and colours made sharp by the cold. The terrain is a never ending emptiness at the edge of the habitable world, but beckons to be explored and interpreted. It is special.  Through my experiences with the land I became interested in the people that inhabited the Arctic landscape. In 1990 I returned to Cape Dorset to set up a small studio, inviting the local residents in for a cup of tea and a short portrait sitting. The result of that trip and the many subsequent ones was a change in my perception of Canada from one of politics and ecomonics to one of landscapes and cultures. I am indebted to the Inuit people for their cooperation and sharing.
